Michelangelo Sand

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Michelangelo Sand was born in Palermo, Italy, on January 24, 1977. Surrounded by a musically rich atmosphere created by his guitarist brother and singer father, he took his first steps in music at the age of 11. In 1987, at just 12, he formed his first band, Angeli della Strada, with childhood friends. The band played covers of popular Italian artists of the time, but it was also where Michelangelo began writing original songs. As the frontman and keyboardist—reflecting the trendy 80s sound—he started showcasing his talent and passion.

Rising Through the Local Scene

By 1991, Michelangelo had expanded his musical skills, learning guitar, and founded a new band, Gimcana. Gaining popularity in Palermo, Gimcana performed at local rock events like Rock Targato Palermo and Rock Lotta AIDS and at live venues across the city. This period marked Michelangelo’s deep engagement with the social issues of his hometown. In 1995, he independently released a six-track album titled Rabbia Umana, addressing themes such as prostitution, religion, politics, and the mafia. The band’s growing fan club followed their performances across Sicily, often traveling long distances on Vespa scooters.

A Turning Point: Military Service and New Beginnings

Moving to Paris

In 1997, Michelangelo’s journey was interrupted by compulsory military service, leading to the band’s dissolution in 1999. The following years were challenging. Despite outward success—a stable job, a fiancée, a home, and a new car—he felt unfulfilled and uninspired. On September 11, 2002, seeking personal and musical rediscovery, he left everything behind and moved to Paris.

Paris: Rebirth and Culinary Success

In Paris, the city’s vibrant atmosphere reignited Michelangelo’s creativity. His passion extended beyond music to another dream: becoming a chef. In 2007, he opened a small, 14-seat restaurant in Montmartre called Michelangelo, which earned acclaim in national and international guides. His culinary success took him to the U.S., where he connected with a music producer, leading to several recordings. Notably, his songs Tra le cosce di una donna and Liberi received airplay on Parisian radio stations. Feeling fulfilled by his culinary achievements, Michelangelo closed his restaurant in 2017 to focus entirely on his first love: music.

A New Chapter in Sheffield

Relocating to Sheffield, UK, in 2017, Michelangelo reunited with an old friend and composed six English-language tracks, resulting in the rock album Sex Machine. Influenced by Pearl Jam’s Seattle sound, Def Leppard’s ballads, and Pantera’s thrash metal, the album was recorded in Palermo and received airplay on local Sicilian radio. It also opened doors to major music festivals and competitions like Sanremo Rock and Rock Targato Italia.

Personal Loss and the COVID Years

In January 2020, the loss of his father and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought immense personal and artistic hardship. Isolated in Palermo for two years, Michelangelo struggled with grief and the absence of live performances.

Post-Pandemic Resurgence

With the end of the pandemic in 2022, Michelangelo set out on a journey to find new experiences and inspiration. Shifting to a pop-rock style, he began writing deeply personal songs reflecting his adventures, fears, pleasures, and relationships. Tracks like Sempre la stessa storia, Non gioco più nel tuo gioco, and Perla Nera showcase the nuances of love and human connection.

The Road to the UK: An Open Mic Journey

In 2024, armed with his savings and a motorhome, Michelangelo embarked on a musical odyssey across England, playing at open mic events from the south to the north. After two months, he gained attention in Manchester, where he was invited to perform at an outdoor festival. Here, filmmaker Felipe Galeazzi noticed his talent and proposed creating a music video for Sempre la stessa storia.

Back to Sicily and Beyond

Michelangelo returned to Palermo to record new songs at Airmusic Studio, including Non gioco più nel tuo gioco. He is currently back in Manchester, finishing the music video and performing at various pubs, documenting his journey through live performances.

Michelangelo’s story is one of passion, resilience, and an unyielding pursuit of artistic fulfillment. His music continues to evolve, reflecting the rich tapestry of his life’s adventures.
